Philosophy Statement

Through the classes I have taken at Concordia University and the experiences I have had in my own classroom, I have developed my own personal teaching philosophy. I believe that a person reacts to their surroundings, which is their classroom environment and the key to their success. My goal is to make sure that my classroom is an inviting environment that is full of respect that is always organized and comfortable for the students to feel like they are at home.

I also believe the classroom should also be accommodating to all the different learners and a place where the special education students and general education students learn together as one community. My goal is to make sure that I have an accommodating classroom for my general and my special education students to learn at their maximum potential no matter the disability. I also plan to hold the special needs students to the same standards as their peers so they will feel the same as their peers, which will help them learn effectively.

For a student to react the way a teacher wants, there must be positive reinforcement. I believe that positive reinforcement is the way to get a student’s positive reaction to anything and everything in the classroom. My goal is to make sure I praise all my students daily for what they are doing good at it. I believe this positive praise will help the student feel motivated to learn and participate in the classroom, which will keep the students excitement for school and learning alive.

When the behavior is on point, then the student can start to learn independently, which I find very important. I believe that children need their independence in learning. Students need enough time to learn on their own. My last goal is to make sure my students get enough time during the school day to learn independently and be a teacher that facilitates my students learning instead of teaching the full school day.
